Somali Government Irked By African Union Report

The Somali government was irked by the African Union report from the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission which responded to President Farmajo’s request.

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, recently requested following a visit to Kinshasa, Congo, the Chairperson of the African Union, President Félix Tshisekedi, to work together on African issues.

The Federal Government of Somalia expresses concern over the statement by the African Peace and Security Council (PSC) condemning the April 12th decision of the Somali Parliamentary Assembly to hold direct elections in the country and full representation of the people.

No international organization, or regional organization can legally condemn a Parliamentary decision of an independent country. This is not legal. FGS does not welcome that statement.

The FGS considers it inappropriate for the Council’s resolution calling on AMISOM peacekeepers to monitor the activities of the Somali Armed Forces.

The Somali government sees it as discouraging for the Somali Armed Forces. The government also considers the article illegal.

Because it clearly contradicts AMISOM’s mandate under Security Council Resolution 2568 of 12 March 2021. It also contradicts AMISOM’s Transition Plan for Somalia. Transition Plan (STP) issued in February 2021.

It also violates the prestige of the Somali Armed Forces, and provides support and assistance to terrorist organizations Somalis are fighting day and night.

The FGS is deeply saddened and deeply concerned by Kenya and Djibouti, which have been campaigning hard for the House to pass resolutions against the Parliament and the Somali Government.

And we are making it clear to Somalia that we will not have confidence in a conference on Somalia chaired by non-treaty countries, which is allowed by Article 11 of the Peace and Security Council Protocol which clearly states that turn around and decide on what is detrimental to the sovereignty of an African country.

Finally, we call on African countries to work together for peace, security and co-operation on their continent, and to solve their problems through their own rules and conventions.
